The Aruanã Pan-Amazonian Institute is pleased to announce its confirmed participation in the Political Commission of the Peoples’ Summit towards COP 30. Our involvement in this important process strengthens the inclusion of our perspective in the dialogue about the future of the Pan-Amazon region and the global climate challenges we collectively face.
The Peoples’ Summit, with its history dating back to 1992, stands as a plural space for the articulation of diverse voices within the broader context of climate discussions. This forum brings together Indigenous, traditional, and peripheral communities, offering a platform where their experiences and proposals—often marginalized in other decision-making arenas—can be duly recognized.
In contrast to the formal negotiations of the COPs, the Peoples’ Summit addresses the climate crisis from a perspective that integrates social dimensions, human rights, and territorial issues. This environment fosters the development of analyses and solutions that seek a balance between social and environmental justice.
The Aruanã Institute’s inclusion in the Political Commission reflects our commitment to advancing a just and inclusive transition. Since August 2023, the Summit has been developing collective proposals that consider the realities and knowledge of communities that are often underrepresented in decision-making processes.
The hosting of the Summit in Belém highlights the Amazon’s role not only as a biome of global significance but also as a hub of knowledge and innovation in climate resilience. In this context, traditional practices and the contributions of forest peoples are valued, recognizing the importance of each idea and experience in shaping an equitable future.
The 2024 Peoples’ Summit will bring together a diversity of actors, including women’s movements, Indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant communities (quilombolas), youth, and groups from varied backgrounds. Its objective is to formulate an agenda that acknowledges the deep interconnection between climate issues and territorial rights.
Aruanã’s Contributions to the Peoples’ Summit
The Aruanã Pan-Amazonian Institute will contribute to discussions focused on:
Pursuing global climate justice, emphasizing the recognition of shared responsibilities and the implementation of equitable solutions.
Protecting human rights in the context of climate change, ensuring that adaptation and mitigation strategies respect and promote these rights.
Advancing a socially sensitive energy transition, promoting models that do not penalize the most vulnerable populations and ensure equitable access to energy.
Promoting agroecology as a viable alternative for sustainable food production, environmental conservation, and community autonomy.
We recognize the urgency of finding effective solutions. Our participation in the Peoples’ Summit aims to ensure that climate decisions incorporate a wide range of perspectives, engaging diverse sectors of society in the collective construction of a sustainable future.
