On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the Aruanã Pan-Amazonian Institute participated in the Franco-Brazilian forum "Forests, Biodiversity and Human Societies," an event of international relevance. Our research director, Israel Araujo , participated at the invitation of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNH/Paris) and the University of São Paulo (USP) , bringing the Amazonian perspective to the center of the debate.
On this occasion, Israel Araujo shared his experience as a researcher and citizen of the region, highlighting the depth of his research involving traditional communities, agroforestry management, and agroextractive practices . He also emphasized the unavoidable importance of anthropology for a complete understanding of biodiversity, emphasizing how this discipline is crucial for developing sustainable and culturally sensitive solutions.
A central point of his presentation was the urgent need for funding to develop excellent research . Araujo argued that reciprocal relations between Brazil and France cannot be limited to grants, sometimes with limited funding, or sending students abroad. He believes it is essential that these partnerships include continued funding strategies and the construction of infrastructure that benefits the linguistic, academic, and professional development of Brazilian researchers, especially those from underrepresented regions of Brazil .
Aruanã's participation in this forum reinforces our commitment to promoting the scientific knowledge and experience of Amazonian peoples on a global stage. We believe that valuing and investing in local researchers is essential for the future of the Amazon and for building a more equitable and productive international dialogue on biodiversity and sustainable development.
